Mobile Unit & On-Site Hands-On Training

Mobile Training Units

To facilitate access to high-quality training for drinking water system owners, operators, and operating authorities across Northern Ontario, the Centre introduced a self-contained drinking water training and technology demonstration platform, the Mobile training unit (MTU).

Each MTU is equipped with leading-edge drinking water treatment demonstration equipment including a sodium hypochlorite feed system, an ultraviolet unit, and an ultra-filtration membrane unit.  There is also a water quality laboratory including a spectrophotometer, colorimeter, turbidimeter and a multiparameter device that can help in testing for more than 20 water quality parameters.

To make the MTUs even more effective, the Centre developed a training course specifically for small systems operators that includes hands-on exercises using the equipment carried onboard.  Drinking Water Treatment and Quality Monitoring is a Ministry of the Environment Director-approved course bearing 0.6 CEUs.  To view the course outline, please click here.

The Centre currently operates two MTUs, and through contracts with Confederation College of Applied Arts and Technology in Thunder Bay and Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology in Sault Ste. Marie, is able to provide on-site training throughout Northwestern and Northeastern Ontario.  The MTU operated by Confederation College can accommodate up to four trainees, while the MTU at Sault College seats six.
